Pita Bread

We all love pita bread.  It's great for dipping, and stuffing sandwich fillings into the pocket is always tasty.  Here's a recipe for you to make it yourself at home.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups white flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp yeast
  • 1 1/8 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp oil

Directions

  1. Mix flour, salt, sugar, and yeast in a bowl.  Add water and oil and mix well.
  2. Knead for 10 minutes.  Cover and let rise in warm place for one hour.
  3. Divide dough into eight pieces.  On floured surface, roll each into a small circle 6-7" in diameter.  Let rise for 30 minutes.
  4. Heat oven to 500ºF.
  5. Place 2-3 pitas onto a wire rack.  Put the whole rack into the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes.  The pitas will puff up.
  6. Remove from oven and cool on wire rack.  Bake the rest in the same fashion.
  7. Cover pitas with a damp towel.  This will transfer moisture and soften them.  When they're soft, push them flat and eat.
